Week 14 History Essay

This week, I learned about three inventions and one person. The inventions are spectacles, mechanical clocks, and the paper mill. The person I learned about is Robert Grosseteste. First, I will tell you about spectacles. Spectacles are basically the first eyeglasses, and they were used to correct eyesight. They were invented by a man named Kepler in 1604. Many people still wear glasses today, and they help many people see. Second, I learned about mechanical clocks, which is a machine that measures time and subdivides the days into smaller units. It was used to tell time and model the solar system. The part of the clock that makes it work by clicking gears is called the escapement. It was invented in China in the 700s, and we still use mechanical clocks today. The third invention is the paper mill. The paper mill is a factory for making paper out of wood pulp. The first paper mill was built in Samarkand. Paper mills are still being used to make paper from wood. I also learned about a person this week named Robert Grosseteste. He was a bishop and an ecclesiastical statesman in England in the 1200s. He is most remembered for forming the basis for the scientific method which is still used today. These are the inventions and people I learned about this week.
