Week 32 History Essay
This week I learned about Benjamin Thompson, gas lighting, William Murdoch, and the screw-cutting lathe. Benjamin Thomas was an officer, scientist, inventor, and nobleman who lived 1753-1814. He made the theory of heat, and invented the double boiler, kitchen range, and the drip coffee pot. Gas lighting was invented by William Mudoch in 1792. It is a production of artificial light from combustion of gaseous fuel. William Murdoch was a Scottish engineer who lived 1754-1839. He discovered coal gas at Redruth in Cornwall. Screw-cutting lathe was invented by Henry Maudslay in c1800. It is a machine capable of cutting very accurate screw threads. Those are all the things that I learned about this week. My favorite one was the screw-cutting lathe, because I thought it was fascinating how it works.
