Week 34 History Essay

This week I learned about the semaphore telegraph, the cotton gin, Eli Whitny, and the hydraulic press. The semaphore telegraph was invented by Claude Cappe in 1792. The semaphore telegraph was kind of like playing the game telephone. There were stations set up with people using a telescope and a large beam with arms that could be used to send messages by moving the arms to make visual signals. It later led to electric telegraph and morse code. The cotton gin was invented by Eli Whinty in 1793. It is a machine for separating cotton fibers from seeds. This made cotton harvesting much faster, and the cotton industry exploded. The hydraulic press was invented by Joseph Bramah in 1795. It is a machine that presses using a hydraulic cylinder and compression to form different metals. Those are the things that I learned about this week. My favorite was the semaphore telegraph. It was so interesting how they developed a way to communicate over a long distance so long ago.
