Week 36 History Essay
This week I learned about two inventions and some worldviews and trends. The inventions are morphine, and the Jacquard loom. Morphine is a type of drug that helps take away pain. It can be in different forms, usually as a pill or as a shot. It was invented by Friedrich Sterturner in 1804. Sterturner was able to isolate morphine from the poppy plant, which was the first time anyone had ever done that. Morphine can take away pain, but can also be very dangerous, because people can easily become addicted to it. Next is the Jacquard loom, which was invented by Joseph Marie Jacquard in 1804. It is a machine that is attached to a power loom, and made the process of weaving textile much quicker and easier, and people could now make better and more detailed designs. I learned about trends in history, and how all great inventors have things in common, such as a eureka moment, they were open to new ideas, they overcame adversity, and they made labor-saving devices or systems. One example of a trend in history is all of the inventions around navigation. The trend at the time was to explore the world, so people came up with devices to help them do this. I also learned about the five parts of every worldview which are God, Man, Ethics (Right/Wrong), Judgement, and Time. All the other cultures, except for the ones based on the Bible, had a similar worldview. The reason cultures did not use inventions the same way was because of their worldview. For example, in China they believed in the Tao, and they believed that you could really only think about or contemplate things in the universe. Also, you had to stay in the level you were born into, so people did not have a reason to try to learn more about something to become successful.
