Lesson 165: Project 3 Review

My Zooniverse project this week was studying the aurora borealis, or northern lights. Scientists are trying to figure out and understand how different small-scale shapes and movements in the aurora are formed. They are also trying to learn what conditions are needed for those different shapes and movements to happen. The scientists are using a camera system at the University of Southampton called ASK, or Auroral Structure and Kinetics. ASK uses telescopes to look at a very small part of the sky in detail. Each video clip is about one second long, and shows different shapes, colors, and movements of the aurora ribbon in the sky. Citizen scientists like me are helping these scientists by looking at the video clip and identifying the different shapes and movements, because there are thousands of hours of video. I really enjoyed the project this week, because I think how the aurora borealis is formed is fascinating.
