Lesson 18-Observing Termites

Termites are small, clear little insects that are tan in color. They eat wood and can cause a lot of damage to houses and other buildings. Termites live in a colony with other termites, and their homes or nests are giant, rocky, dirt hills. Inside the nests are tunnels and rooms for the termites to live and move. One of the rooms is a nursery, where the worker termites bring the queen’s eggs and take care of them. The queen has a head the same size as the other termites, but her body is much bigger. All she does is lay eggs. The queen can lay 30,000 eggs a day. When the baby termites or nymphs hatch, they are white and clear colored. The termites with red or orange heads are soldiers, and the ones with the white heads are workers.
