Lesson 21-Observing House Flies

House flies are disgusting creatures that live all over the world. They are dark gray, oval shaped insects with six legs and antenna. They also have one set of two wings and compound, red eyes. Compound eyes means there are thousands of little lenses in their eyes to help them see very well. They have little hairs on them and are about ¼ to ½ inch long. They can spread diseases by landing on your body or your food. This happens because they vomit on their food and then suck the juice back up. Their babies are called maggots, and they look like grains of rice. They usually live between 15 and 25 days. Even though house flies are very gross, they are important for the environment, because they eat things like animal carcasses.
