Lesson 23: Observing Dragonflies

Dragonflies are not like other flies. They actually have four wings and belong to the order Odonata, which means tooth. There are around 3,000 species of dragonflies on Earth. They have compound eyes, long bodies, and their back wings are broader than the front ones. They have a triangular shaped hole on their back, and this is their breathing hole. They eat mosquitos, and adults eat hundreds of them every day. Dragonflies lay their eggs under water, and the baby nymphs live in the water for a while. I really liked the video that showed how the dragonflies fly. Each wing works by itself. This actually makes them 20% more efficient at flying than insects with only two wings.
