Lesson 57: Observing Hummingbirds
Today I learned about hummingbirds which are classified in the Apodiformes order and the Trochilidae family. Hummingbirds are little birds that flap their wings so fast that you cannot see them move. They can hover in the air like helicopters, and their wings make a humming sound. They eat nectar from flowers, and they use their long beak and tongue to suck the nectar from the flower. They will actually fight and kill other hummingbirds over getting to the nectar. The smallest type of hummingbird is the bee hummingbird. It weighs less than a penny. I really liked learning about these birds today.
