Lesson 63: How Fish Eat

Fish are amazing creatures. There are 32,000 species of fish in the world. Today I am going to explain how fish eat. Some fish suck food into their mouths like a vacuum. They open their mouths and suck water in, and then the water goes out through their open gills. One type of fish, the sling-jaw wrasse, actually swings their bottom jaw out and sucks in their prey like a vacuum tube. The video was very interesting to watch in slow motion. Another type of fish, the rock fish, waits in the sand looking like a rock, and then sucks in the water around it when its prey comes close enough. The water pushes out through the open gills, and then the gills close so the water doesn’t go back in. Fish are very interesting creatures, and I am excited to learn more about them.
